Two colloquia were held each year from 1992 - 1995: one in the fall, and one in the spring. The first two years, each colloquium was held both in Spartanburg, SC, on the campus of USCS, and in Greenville, SC. In the final year, a site was chosen midway between the communities and a single meeting was held in the fall, and again in the spring.
These sessions were designed to be community forums addressing timely, relevant issues. They were intended to inspire the entire community, including parents, teachers, students, and business leaders, to seek excellence and to increase expectations with regard to mathematics and its teaching.
In conjunction with each colloquium, sessions were scheduled at which the guest presenter met with principals and administrators to discuss means by which school administrators may facilitate change in mathematics instruction.
The first colloquium in the series coincided with the announcement of the South Carolina Mathematics Curriculum Framework. This event provided the theme of the initial forum.
