The teacher enhancement project, Partnership for Excellence: A Model Program for Professional Development of Middle and Secondary School Mathematics Teachers, was funded by the National Science Foundation. The project featured colloquia, inservice workshops, academic year course work, and summer institutes for middle and secondary school mathematics teachers - all aimed at increasing teachers' effectiveness in implementing the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics and their sense of community.
A sequence of courses varying in credit from one to three semester hours (in contact hours, from fifteen to forty-five hours) has been developed and offered through the project. The courses seek to foster the goals articulated by the NCTM Standards. The structure and materials for the courses has been designed by teams of public school teachers and university mathematics faculty.
