Using Excel for Linear Regression

Begin with your x (ordinate) values in one column and your y (abscissa) values in another.

Select Tools | Data Analysis

If Data Analysis does not appear in your Tools menu, select Tools|Add-Ins. Check the ð Analysis ToolPak box and click OK. Then select Tools|Data Analysis.

In the Data Analysis tools, find Regression. Select it and click OK

With the cursor in the Input Y Range box, select the Values (Numbers) you wish to comprise the Y values. (You may have to move the Regression dialog box by dragging its top bar to expose the Y values.) You can select the Y values, of course, by dragging the mouse over them, or by holding down the shift key and pressing the appropriate arrow key.

Click the cursor into the Input X Range box and repeat the process just described to put the cell addresses of the x-values in that box.

If you want your regression output on the same sheet as your data, select

¤ Output Range and click the cursor into the box to its right. Select the cell on your worksheet where you wish the output display to begin (generally below or to the right of your data values.) Then click OK

This produces a large amount of information including the y-intercept (Intercept) and slope (X variable) coefficients.
