Lab Assignments:

Dec. 1:

  • Lab final on the following experiments will be given at the beginning of the lab period:
    • Expt. 1 Colors and Reaction Rates
    • Expt. 2 Chemical Clock
    • Expt. 3 Equilibrium
    • Expt. 5 pKa of a weak acid
    • Expt. 6 Ksp of PbI2
  • Lab final study guide
  • Turn in electolysis report (p.7-7 - 7-8, spreadsheet, formula page)
  • Turn in portfolio of all graded lab work from this semester (lab reports (Expt. 1, 2, 3, 5, 6), 2 qual quizzes, abstract, safety quiz, 6 prelab quizzes, and spreadsheet exercise)
  • There will be time to complete the qual expt. after the final exam.
  • Qual lab notebooks should be turned in by Friday, Dec. 3.

Nov. 24 - No Lab - Thanksgiving Break

Nov. 17:

  • Lab will be open at 8:15 for those who are behind in the qual expt.
  • Read the electrolysis experiment, do the prelab questions, be ready for a prelab quiz.
  • Turn in the Ksp report (p. 6-7 - 6-9, calibration curve, spreadsheet, formula page)
  • Turn in the Ksp abstract.

Nov. 10:

  • Read the Ksp experiment, do the prelab questions, and be prepared for a prelab quiz.
  • Turn in the pKa of a weak acid lab report, p.5-9 - 5-12, spreadsheet, graph, and formula page.

Nov. 3:

  • Qual Quiz 2 on Groups 3 and 4 cations will be given in recitation on Monday, Nov. 1. Bring your lab notebook for the quiz.
  • Read the pKa of a Weak Acid experiment, do the prelab questions, and be prepared for a prelab quiz.
  • Do the ChemPages section on the pH meter.

Oct. 27:

  • This is the last week of the Qualitative Analysis lab. You should be completing the anion unknowns and the salt unknown. Those who are behind schedule can continue working to complete qual during the remaining lab periods after that week's experiment has been completed.
  • Qual Quiz 2 on Groups 3 and 4 cations will be given during recitation on Nov. 1. You can use your lab notebook for the quiz..

Oct. 20:

  • Complete the reactions in your lab notebook from Qual Week 4.
  • Read the section on the anion analysis (Part II p. 4-15)
  • Qual Quiz 2 on Groups 3 and 4 cations will be given during recitation on Nov. 1. You can use your lab notebook for the quiz.

Oct. 13:

  • Complete the reactions in your lab notebook from Qual Week 3.
  • Qual Quiz 1 on Groups 1 and 2 cations will be given in recitation on Monday, Oct. 11. Bring your lab notebook for the quiz.

Oct. 6:

  • Complete the reactions in your lab notebook from Qual Week 2.
  • Qual Quiz 1 on Group 1 and 2 cations will be given during recitation on Oct. 11. You can use your qual lab notebook on the quiz.

Sept. 29:

  • Read and study pages 4-8 thru 4-14 in your lab manual.
  • Complete the reactions in your lab notebook from Qual Week 1.

Sept. 22:

  • Read Expt. 4 Qualitative Analysis
  • Bring bound lab notebook
  • Do the ChemPages sections on the centrifuge and pH paper
  • Turn in the Chemical Equilibria report pgs. 3-9 - 3-14, spreadsheet and formula page.

Sept. 15:

  • Read Expt. 3, Chemical Equilibria, and do the prelab questions on p. 3-7. Be prepared for a prelab quiz.
  • Turn in the Chemical Clock report (pgs. 2-7 - 2-9), the spreadsheet, formula page and graph.

Sept. 8:

  • Read Expt. 2, A Chemical Clock, and do the prelab questions on p. 2-5.
  • Turn in the Colors and Reaction Rates report (pgs. 1-5 - 1-8), 3 graphs, spreadsheet and formula page.

Sept. 1:

  • Turn in the spreadsheet assignment which includes the printed spreadsheet, formula page and graph. The instructions for the assignment begin on pg. 0-9 of the lab manual. The spreadsheet template can be downloaded from this website.
  • There will be a safety quiz on the safety video, the safety section in the lab manual, and safety information given in the lab.
  • Read Expt. 1 Colors and Reaction Rates and do the prelab assignment on p. 1-1. Be prepared for a prelab quiz. View the following ChemPages sections: (ChemPages is located only on the computers in the Smith 4th floor computer lab.)
    • Spectrometer, Spectronic 20
    • Spectrophotometer, Scanning UV/VIS
    • Spectroscope, Handheld, Additional topics, Colors

    NOTE: To view video content of ChemPages, follow these directions:
