Lab Assignments:

Week of Mar. 27:

  • Read Expt. 5, pKa of a Weak Acid, do the prelab questions, and be prepared for a prelab quiz.
  • Do the ChemPages sections on the pH meter
  • Turn in your Qual Lab Notebook if you have completed the qual unknowns.

 

Week of Mar. 20:

  • Qual quiz 2 on the Group 3 and 4 cations will be given during recitation this week. You can use your qual lab notebook for the quiz, so bring your qual notebook to recitation!
  • This week in lab students should be completing the anions unknowns and the salt (both cation and anion) unknown. This is the last week of the qual experiment! If needed, attend another lab section to complete your unknowns.

 

Week of Mar. 13:

  • This week in lab students should be completing the general cation unknown and starting the anion analysis.
  • Read p. 4-15 - 4-17 on the anion analysis.
  • Complete the reactions in your lab notebook for the Group 3 and 4 cations in the known solution.
  • Qual quiz 2 on Group 3 and 4 cations will be given during recitation the week of Mar. 20.

 

Week of Mar. 6: No lab or recitation! Have a great Spring Break!

Week of Feb. 27:

  • This week in lab students should be completing the Group 3 & 4 unknown and working to complete the general unknown.
  • Complete the reactions and conclusions in your lab notebook from Qual Week 3.
  • An abstract on the Ksp lab will be due in lab. Follow the guidelines in the Appendix of the lab manual (p. A-4 - A-10) and the rubric.Turn in the abstract with the rubric.
  • Qual Quiz 1 on the Group 1 and 2 cations will be given in recitation this week. You can use your qual lab notebook for the quiz, so bring your qual notebook to recitation.

 

Week of Feb. 20:

  • This week in lab we will be completing the Group 3 & 4 cations with the known solution and starting the Group 3 & 4 unknown.
  • Complete the reactions and conclusions in your lab notebook from Qual Week 2.
  • An abstract on the Ksp lab will be due in lab the week of Feb. 27. Follow the guidelines in the Appendix of the lab manual (p. A-4 - A-10) and the rubric.
  • Qual quiz 1 on the Group 1 and 2 cations will be given in recitation during the week of Feb. 27. You can use your qual lab notebooks for the quiz.

 

Week of Feb. 13:

  • This week in lab we will be: finishing Group 1 & 2 cations with the known solution, identifying a Group 1 & 2 unknown, working on Group 3 & 4 cations with the known solution.
  • Carefully read pages 4-7 thru 4-14 and the flow charts on pages 4-21 thru 4-24 in your lab manual to find the reactions for your lab notebook.
  • Complete the reactions and conclusions in your lab notebook from Qual Week 1.
  • In preparation for writng the abstract on the Ksp lab, read the section on writing abstracts and using Word in the Appendix of the lab manual, p. A-4 - A-10. The Ksp abstract is due in lab the week of Feb. 27. Rubrics for the abstract will be available in the lab this week.

 

Week of Feb. 6:

  • Read Expt. 4, Qualitative Analysis, no prelab quizzes on this lab!
  • Bring a bound lab notebook - you will not be able to start lab without this!
  • Do the ChemPages sections on pH paper and the centrifuge (including the additional topics).
  • Turn in the Ksp report (pgs. 7-9), calibration curve, spreadsheet, and formula page.

 

Week of Jan. 30:

  • Read Expt. 3, the Ksp of PbI2, do the prelab questions, and be prepared for a prelab quiz.
  • View the ChemPages section on the centrifuge.
  • Turn in the Chemical Equilibria report (pgs. 9-14), spreadsheet, and formula page.

 

Week of Jan. 23:

  • Read Expt. 2, Chemical Equilibria, and do the prelab questions on p. 7. Be prepared for a prelab quiz.
  • Turn in the Colors and Reaction Rates report (pgs. 7-11), 3 graphs, spreadsheet, and formula page.

     

Week of Jan. 16:

  • Bring your lab coat and goggles to lab!! Wear closed toe shoes and long pants.
  • Turn in the spreadsheet assignment which includes the printed spreadsheet, formula page and graph. The instructions for the assignment begin on pg. 0-11 of the lab manual. The spreadsheet template can be downloaded from this website.
  • There will be a safety quiz on the safety video, the safety section in the lab manual, and safety information given in the lab.
  • Complete the FlinnPrep Lab Safety Course and quiz using the codes sent by your instructor.
  • Read Expt. 1 Colors and Reaction Rates and do the prelab questions on p. 1-5 - 1-6. Read the introductory information on the Spectrophotometer in the Appendix of the lab manual p. A-15-A-16. View the ChemPages sections below. Be prepared for a prelab quiz!

Week of Jan. 9:

  • Lab and recitation will meet this week!!
  • Lab will begin with the required safety training and check in. Bring your lab manual to lab.
  • Wear closed toe shoes to lab.
  • Bring your calculator to recitation.
