Guidelines and Information for Authors
  • The SCAS Journal is an electronic journal. All submissions for journal consideration must be in electronic format. Email submissions (in Microsoft Word format) as an attachment to the editor-in-chief. ->
Please note: files larger than 3.5MB may be automatically rejected by the USC email system.  If you file is large (>3MB) and/or you have difficulty emailing me, please call 864-503-5685 for an alternate email address to use for manuscript submission.
Do not send submissions directly to section editors - they will not be reviewed.
  • Research articles, review papers, and notes (short articles and reports) are welcome.
  • There are no geographic restrictions for articles submitted. Manuscripts are not restricted to research conducted in South Carolina.
  • There are no page charges.  One author must be a member of the South Carolina Academy of Sciences. Please note that access to the full text of articles is restricted to members of the South Carolina Academy of Science.
  • The estimated time for a first review of submitted manuscripts is 8-12 weeks. If you have not received notification regarding the status of your manuscript by 8 weeks post-submission, please contact the editor-in-chief for an update. Lengthy manuscripts, submissions near holidays, and submissions during the summer may require additional review time.
  • At least one copy of the manuscript, with line numbers added for reference, will be returned to the author. Reviewer's comments will accompany the manuscript. Manuscripts and comments may be returned by conventional mail or email (discretion of the editor). It is recommended that authors read the Guidelines for Section Editors and Reviewers to better understand the Journal's review process and requirements.
  • All submissions, with the exception of meeting abstracts, extended abstracts, and announcements must go through the peer-review process.
  • THE LEGAL STUFF - Manuscripts published by the Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science (also referred to as the Journal, or SCAS Journal) are copyrighted by the South Carolina Academy of Sciences. Authors have permission to replicate their own articles for professional purposes (reprints) and contents from the Journal may be distributed in accordance with "fair use" copyright laws. Indexing and abstract services have standing permission to include abstracts or summaries of articles published in the Journal. Distribution or publication of material from the Journal in excess of "fair use", particularly, but not limited to, the re-distribution or re-posting of contents in an electronic format, is prohibited without written permission from either the SCAS President, Journal editor-in-chief, or the SCAS Journal Advisory Board.

Before emailing your submission, please insure that your submission meets the following requirements:

  • At least one author must be a member of the Academy. If the author is not a member, please join prior to submission of the manuscript to insure review of the manuscript.
  • The manuscript must address one of the subject areas of interest to the Journal: Agricultural Sciences, Anthropology/Archaeology, Biochemistry, Bioengineering, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Economics, Engineering/Engineering Technology, General Science, Geography, Geology/Paleontology, History, Mathematics/Statistics, Medical Science, Nursing Science, Philosophy, Physics/Astronomy, Psychology, Science Education, Social Work, or Sociology.
-> Please specify in your email the category most appropriate to your manuscript and any sub-specialty your manuscript addresses (i.e. Biology, herpetology).
  • Check your manuscript prior to submission with current anti-virus software.
  • Submissions are to be in Microsoft Word 2003 or earlier Microsoft Word format, 12 point font size. The typeface required is Times or Times New Roman.
  • Language for all submissions is English.
  • If the manuscript file size is larger than 3MB, email PRIOR to submission for an alternate email address that will accept large file sizes.
  • The manuscript must have a title page with:
    • Manuscript title
Author(s) - please underline the names of authors who are members of the Academy
Institution(s) and address of all authors
E-mail address of author for correspondence (VERY IMPORTANT)
      Keywords for subject index
  • In addition to the title page, the manuscript must have the following sections with headings (as applicable):
    • Abstract: Abstract must be the only text on the second page. The abstract should be self explanatory and without citations. (This section is required)

Introduction: Introduction should include a description of the background and aims of the work and what has been accomplished to date.

Materials and Methods: Include full descriptions of all experimental procedures.

Results: Results should be clearly stated and supported by figures, tables, or graphical representations of the findings.

Discussion: The discussion should address the importance of the major findings of the work, expanding upon the results. A discussion of the implications of the research to the general area of investigation is particularly useful.

Acknowledgements: Should be brief (if any).

      References
References must follow the Council of Biology Editors (CBE) name-year style. See the latest copy of the Journal for format.  Within the article, if a citation has more than two authors, use the first author followed by "et al."  All authors must be listed and Journal names should not be abbreviated in the "References" section.  Complete coverage of this reference style is found in Scientific Style and Format: The CBE Manual for Authors, Editors and Publishers, 6th edition.  The internet links below also provide examples of the CBE style in use:

Figures and Tables: Figures and tables should be included (embedded) in the text at a point soon after the reference to the figure or table is made. Figures and tables should be numbered sequentially as they appear in the article.  When embedding figures, photos, or scans, please verify that all graphics are "stand-alone" and do not require any external reference or external program to display properly.
