Historical Notes on Our SCCTM Grants Program

Lane E. Peeler, State Department of Education

The following is a portion of an article that appeared earlier in The MathMate, with current updates.

The first SCCTM grants were awarded during the summer prior to the 1991–92 school year. From the beginning, the SCCTM Executive Board has determined the maximum number of grants that could be awarded each year, generally between two and four. Our newly revised Constitution allows for the selection of up to five winners each year so five grant awards will be the maximum number awarded for 1999–2000. Each grant award is funded at the level requested by the writer up to a maximum of $1,000. Betty McDaniel and Lane Peeler developed the guidelines for the grant awards in 1990 at the request of the SCCTM President, Mary Elmore, and that Executive Board. The grants committee is composed of a chair, selected yearly by the SCCTM president, and the five SCCTM vice-presidents. The grant award procedures are included at this Internet site.

The SCCTM grants program will be beginning its ninth year in 1999–2000. A brief history of the funded grants is given in the table below. Over the eight-year history, 29 grants have been funded for a total of about $26,000. There have been 17 elementary, one elementary/middle, seven middle, and four high school grants funded during these eight years. Districts that contain schools that have received grants are listed below the table along with the number of grants received. Schools in 21 different districts have received SCCTM grants. Aiken County leads all districts with seven grants funded.
